Q. CAECILIUS METELLUS, silver denarius, issued c.130 B.C., 3.87 grams, Rome Mint, Crawford 256/1, Sydenham 509, B. Caecilia 21, BMC 1053, Obv. Helmeted head of Roma to r., below chin *, behind Q. ME(ligated) TE(ligated), dotted border, Rev. Jupiter in walking quadriga to r., holding reins and thunderbolt in l. hand and branch in r. hand, in exergue ROMA; another C. Cassius, silver denarius, issued c.126 B.C., 3.78 grams, Rome Mint, Crawford 266/1, Sydenham 502, B. Cassia 1, BMC 1032, Obv. Helmeted head of Roma to r., behind * and voting urn, dotted border, Rev. Libertas in quadriga to r., holding reins and rod (vindicta) in l. hand and pileus in r. hand, below horses C.CASSI, in exergue ROMA. Both toned, very fine - good very fine, (1434-5). (2)

Ex C.Pitchfork Collection and both previously from the Duke of Northumberland Collection, sold at Sothebys, London, November 4, 1982 (lot 250 and 253 parts). This first Specimen not described but second described on p.37 by Rear Admiral Henry Smyth 'Descriptive Catalogue, A Cabinet of Roman Family Coins belonging to His Grace the Duke of Northumberland K.G.', published 1856.
