L. MANLIUS TORQUATUS FOR L.SULLA IMP., silver denarius, issued 82 B.C., 3.81 grams, Mint moving with Sulla, Crawford 367/5, Sydenham 757a, BMC 11 (East), B.Manlia 5, Obv. Helmeted head of Roma to r., before L.MANLI, behind PR[O Q], dotted border, Rev. Sulla in walking quadriga with Victory flying above crowning him, below in exergue [L]. SVLLA. IMP, dotted border. Toned, nearly extremely fine, (1448).

Ex C. Pitchfork Collection and previously from Glendinings, London, July 9 (lot 53 part).

Lucius Manlius Torquatus was proquaestor to L.Sulla during the Mithradatic war and the type represents a triumph granted to the great imperator.
