TRIO TO EMINENT WOMAN: Member of the Order of Australia breast badge; Officer of the Military and Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem breast badge; Elizabeth II Jubilee Medal 1977, all fitted with a ladies ribbon bow; the first with miniature medal, ladies brooch bar and riband. The first pantograph named, 'Joan Margaret Redshaw', the rest unnamed. All mounted on display board with double sided tape, extremely fine.
Together with three badges for Northern N.S.W. Federation Justice of the Peace, one member, one Past President and one Patron, all (KC) in gilt and enamel; NSW Women Justices' Association gilt lapel badge (KC); ID pin for Australasian Medical Congress (B.M.A.) 9th Session, Sydney 1955 fitted with name tag 'Dr. Joan M. Redshaw'; also with numerous award certificates, some copies, including Diplomas of Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from Sydney University; N.S.W. Medical Practitioner's Certificate; Diploma in Child Heath R.C.S. (London); Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children Certificate of Service; Bestowal Certificate for Military and Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem; Community and Local Government Award Certificates; letters concerning her involvement with 'Quota International'; numerous photographs of recipient including investitures in both orders; newspaper clippings; copies of entries in 'Who's Who', 'Notable Australians' 'Debretts', the World's Who's Who of Women' and 'Men and Women of Distinction'; detailed eulogy and obituary; newspaper obituaries.
AM: 8/6/1981 in Queen's Birthday CW List. Awarded to Joan Margaret Redshaw, AKA Mrs A Strong (RL), for Service to the Community.
Dr Joan Margaret Redshaw was a prominent doctor interested in community issues. She was born in Sydney in 1921 and later graduated from Sydney University with a Bachelor of Medicine degree in 1944. During WWII she worked in Sydney and in England just after the war. On 23 April 1949 she married Arthur Edward Gordon Strong (Colonel). She established a medical practice at Nabiac, on the mid north coast of N.S.W. Dr Redshaw was a member of various organisations including President of Western Pacific Region of the International Medical Women's Association, Commissioner in the Planning Environment Commission for 6 years, involvement with the Public Education Program of the Alcohol Committee of the Manning River District Hospital, and twelve years on the Council of the Australian Medical Association. She was also a Justice of the Peace involved with the NSW Women Justices' Association and held the positions of President and Patron of the Northern NSW Federation of Justices of the Peace. In 1966 Dr Redshaw made history when in America she was the first Australian to be elected a director of Quota International, an organisation for women similar to Rotary. In 1948 she was also the first women's ship surgeon - Orient Lines' SS Orontes'. She died at Newcastle on 11 May 1994.
