SOLD $2,400

AUGUSTUS, (27 B.C. - A.D. 14), gold aureus, Lugdunum mint, issued 15-13 B.C. (7.690 grams), obv. bare head of Augustus to right, around AVGVSTVS DIVI F, rev. IMP X in exergue, bull butting to right, (cf.S.1610 [denarius], RIC 166a, BMC 450). Slightly off centred on the obverse and reverse, trace of mounting on the edge, otherwise nearly very fine and rare.

The bull is merely symbolic of the dominant power of Rome, especially in Gaul.
