THEOPHILUS, (A.D. 829-842), gold solidus, issued at Syracuse mint in A.D. 831-842, (3.53 g), obv. facing bust of Theophilus, crowned with cross, holding cross potent and wearing chlamys, around **Q*EO FILOS, rev. facing bust of Theophilus, wearing loros, cross on head, holding cross on globe, around **Q*E O [FILOS], (S.1670, DOC 24, BMC 31-33, R.-). Nearly extremely fine and very scarce.

Ex D.J.Foster Collection and previously from Spink Noble Sale 44 (lot 1283).
