CONVICT TOKEN, 'Wm Norton/A+/21/17Fazely91' (perhaps Wm Norton, age 21, born at Fazeley [note engraved as Fazely], transported 1791) engraved on a shaved down Great Britain halfpenny (?), decorated with stylised wreath and a few flowers, reverse plain. Very fine.
William Norton, a soldier, was indicted for stealing a silver watch, value 18s, a steel watch chain, value 2d. and two metal seals, value 4d, the property of James Forrester who was a servant to Mr. Ducarrel at Margate. The theft occurred at the White Hart, a public house on Chancery-lane. Norton was tried by the first Middlesex Jury before Mr. Justice Buller, found guilty and sentenced to Transportation for 7 years. Norton arrived at New South Wales on 13 October 1791 aboard the Albemarle.
