LOCRI OPUNTII AND EPIKNEMIDIA, (369-338 B.C.), silver stater, (12.00 g), obv. head of Persephone to left, wreath with corn, wearing ear-ring, rev. Ajax son of Oileus, naked but for helmet, advancing to right, holding sword and large shield, decorated with griffin, broken spear on ground, star below to right, around **OPONTIW N*, (cf.S.2326, cf.BMC 27, BCD 58 [NAC Sale 55], SNG's-, McClean -, Weber -, Traite -, Gulbenkian 491 [same dies]). Slightly pitted obverse, few known examples, very fine/good very fine and very rare.
Ex Noble Numismatics Sale 97 (lot 3285) previously from Sale 78 (lot 5000) and obtained from Spink & Son, London, December 1998 with ticket. The BCD example in nearly extremely fine realised 6000 + 15% SFr.
