AUGUSTUS, (27 B.C. - A.D. 14), silver denarius, Lugdunum mint, struck 8 B.C., (3.74 g), obv. bare head to right of Augustus, around [AVG]VST[VS] DIVI F, rev. Gaius Caesar on horseback galloping right, holding sword and reins, eagle between two standards behind, C.CAES above, AVGVS [F] below, (S.1596, RSC 40, RIC 410). Toned, banker's mark on neck and some surface roughness, otherwise very fine and very scarce.

Gaius was the grandson and adopted son and heir of Augustus but died on campaign in Armenia at the age of 24.
