COMMODUS, (A.D. 177-192), AE as, issued 192 A.D., Rome Mint, (9.31 g), obv. head to right of Commodus in lion skin, around L AEL AVREL COM[M AVG P FEL], rev. HER CVL/ROM AN/AV GV/S [C], divided by a club upright all in a wreath, (S.5864, RIC 644, BMC 725 [Pl.111,6], C.193). Nearly very fine but weak in places, rare.

Ex Dr V.J.A. Flynn Collection. and previously from Noble Numismatics Sale 107 (lot 3780), the Hungarian 1930s Collection.

Commodus sought on this coin to compare himself with Hercules.
