Robert Albert Buhl, born c1843 in Prussia; 1861 shipmate aboard A H Badger that arrived NSW; Disch29May1866 from A H Badger, rated Able Seaman; 30May1866 into Newcastle gaol for 'conspiring to disobey lawful orders aboard ship', 14 days hard labour; 11Jun1866 discharged from gaol, sentence complete; 07Aug1866 engaged on the 'Manukau', rated Able Seaman; 1869 Married; 15May1869 member of Newcastle lifeboat crew; 01Jan1872 member of NSW Naval Brigade; 04 Sep1872 after spending 18 years in NSW was naturalised as a citizen of the Colony of NSW with the rights of a natural born British subject; Emb.08Aug1900 on SS Salamis for China; RTA 26Apr1901 on SS Chingtu; Died at his home at Cooks Hill, Newcastle 31Jul1903 and at the time was one of the oldest stevedores of the district; Buried at Sandgate Cemetery, Newcastle.

Robert Buhl was so highly thought of that when his wife died in 1891 the flags of ships in Newcastle harbour were flown at half-mast. Apparently his death was brought on by the untimely death of his son, also Robert Albert Buhl, who was killed at sea on 13Sep1901.
