M. HERENNIUS, (108-107 B.C.), silver denarius, Rome mint, (3.70 g), obv. Pietas head to right, behind PIETAS, control mark Q before, rev. Catanaean running right bearing father on shoulders, M.HERENNI on left, (S.185, Cr.308/1b, Syd.567a, RSC Herennia 1a, RBW 1149). Good very fine, scarce.

This piece commemorates the exploits of the Catanian brothers Amphinomus and Anapis who famously carried their parents to safety during an ancient eruption of Mount Etna. The RBW example realised 1500 SFr.
