ITALY, Lucania, Metapontum, (c.450-350 B.C.), AE obol 21mm, (7.31 g), obv. Head of Demeter to right, wearing barley wreath MET to right, rev. barley ear, poppy-head to right, OBO**LOS*, to left upwards, (S.621, Johnston, "The Bronze Coinage of Metapontum" in Kraay-Morkholm Essays, p. 122, 4, SNG ANS 554 [same dies]). Very fine, brown patina, scarce.

A very rare use on ancient coinage of the denomination appearing on a coin, in this case an obol.
