SEPTIMIUS SEVERUS, (A.D. 193-211), AE as, Rome mint, issued A.D. 210, (9.05 g), obv. laureate head of Septimius Severus to right, around [SE]VER[VS] PIVS AVG, rev. around P M TR P XVIII COS III P P, SC in exergue, Roma seated to right holding palladium and spear, before her a kneeling captive, (cf.S.6473, RIC 804, C.551-2). Attractive green patina, slightly uneven flan, nearly very fine, a rare type.

Ex RJM Collection and Alex G. Malloy, Ancient Coins LIII (coin # 235). Previously the William Turner Collection (c.1812-1817) with tickets.
William Turner (1792-1867), British diplomat of the early 19th century,(1820) his interesting and opinionated Journal of a Tour in the Levant describing his adventures in the area. This specimen was obtained by Turner in the course of his travels (1812-1817).
