GROUP OF FOUR: Queen's South Africa Medal 1899, (type 3 reverse), - six clasps - Relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg, Driefontein, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Wittebergen; 1914-15 Star; British War Medal 1914-18; Victory Medal 1914-19. 3371 Tpr: A.L.Waldron. Kitchener's Horse on first medal, 292 Sjt A.L.Waldron. 7/Bn. A.I.F. on second medal, 292 Sgt A.L.Waldron. 7/Bn A.I.F. on third medal, 292 Sjt A.L.Waldron. 7 Bn. A.I.F. on last medal. All medals impressed. Display mounted, toned, a few small edge nicks on third medal, otherwise good very fine.

Alfred Leopold Waldron, civil servant, born at Teigngrace, Newton Abbot, Devon, England; served with Duke of Edinburgh's Volunteer Rifles, Cape Town and Boer War service with Kitchener's Horse; WWI: Enl.17Aug1914 at age 35 in 7Bn at Essendon, Melbourne, Vic; Emb.19Oct1914; To join MEF for Gallipoli Campaign 05Apr1915; WIA 25Apr1915 GSW to face and left shoulder (serious) at Gallipoli landing; RTA 24Jun1916 wounded and for Home Service; Disch.25Sep1916.

In a letter home to a fallen comrade's parents, Alfred Waldron stated that their son died a heroic death and would have felt nothing as he was shot clean through the head. He also stated that he personally had stopped two bullets, one through the left shoulder and the other through the neck and cheek smashing the lower jaw. After the war Alfred was the Honorary Treasurer of the St Kilda Branch of the Returned Sailors & Soldiers Imperial League.
