ENGLAND, Elizabeth I, (1558-1603), Portcullis silver testern (or reale) mm. O, struck 1600/1, obverse legend ends REGIN (Pr.4; S.2607D). Deep grey toned patina, extremely fine and very rare in this condition, one of the finest known.

Ex Noble Numismatics Sale 85B, lot 1630, the R.A.Climpson Collection. Previously H. Salvesen Collection (lot 9) (by purchase from Spink & Son London in 1977). Salvesen catalogue reported 37 known, of which 22 are in private hands.
