ARMY LONG SERVICE AND GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL, trophy of arms type 2 with swivelling suspender and small letters on reverse. 96 Pensd. Qr Mr Sergt. Andw. Munro 21st RA. Impressed. Incorrect ribbon, a few contact marks on reverse, otherwise good very fine.

96 Andrew Munro, also known as Andrew Palmer (see footnote), born 29Sep1826 at Falkirk, Stirlingshire, Scotland; Enl.28Aug1848 at London, in Honourable East India Company Regiment of Artillery for a period of 12 years; Emb.11Oct1848 on Lady Nugent for Bombay, India; with HEIC 1Bn Coy 3 as Gunner from 1849; promoted to Bomber in 1853; to Store and Park Corporal 08Oct1856; Dec1856 served in Persian campaign and in Mar1857 awarded the India General Service Medal with Persia clasp; 01Jun1860 appointed Brigade Quarter Master Sergeant; Trf to B Bty 21 Brigade RArty 07May1861 at same rank; applied for discharge from Royal Regiment of Artillery on 19Oct1868 in Camp Mhow, India after serving for 21 years, and under the Indian Pension Rules with the intention of living in Bombay.

While serving in India he married Indiato Isabella Jennings at Saint Andrew Church, Bombay on 28 April 1853. He and his wife, now using the name of Isabella, had 8 children with one dying of measles. In 1869 the family moved to Australia arriving at Hobson's Bay, Victoria by R.M.S.S.Geelong arriving on 26 September. In Australia Andrew and his wife, Isabella, had 4 more children. During his time in Australia Andrew built the Railway Hotel at Maryborough, Victoria and later was licensee of the Bricklayers Arms in Melbourne Rd, Ballarat. Andrew (Palmer) Munro died on 13 November 1901 at the Homeopathic Hospital, South Melbourne, Victoria. He was buried at Melbourne General Cemetery in Parkville, Melbourne, Victoria on 15 November 1901. Andrew's wife, Isabella Munro, died many years later, on 14 November 1938, at the age of 104.

Note: There is some mystery surrounding the correct name of Andrew Munro (Palmer). No baptismal records can be found and he was recorded as Andrew Palmer, commonly known as Andrew Munro, on his death certificate. However, on Army enlistment papers and various other records he is recorded as Andrew Munro.
