SYRIA, Kingdom of, Seleucus I, (312-280 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, (17.14 g), Seleucia on Tigris mint, first workshop c.300 B.C., obv. head of Herakles to right wearing lion skin with dotted border, rev. Zeus seated on throne to left, eagle in outstretched hand, **DI* below throne, to left monogram HMP, to right **SELEUKOU*, in exergue **BASILE[WS]*, (S.6829, SC 117.1c, Newell ESM 4, ACNAC Houghton 941, BMC 6, SNG Spaer 109-113, HGC 9, 12i). Traces of golden patination, nearly extremely fine and rare in this condition. $$ Ex Dr. L.J. Sherwin Collection and from R.Loosley (Antiquarius) July 1992, from list 26, December 1991 (item 23). Newell counted 17 obverse and 40 reverse dies for this type.
