ITALY, Papale (Stato pontificio Avignon), Urbanus V (Guillaume de Grimoard), (1362-1370), silver bolognino 18mm, (1.06 g), Rome mint, obv. ? VRB : P P : QNTS ? (annulet and double annulet stops throughout), bust facing, wearing tiara and mantum, rev. + ? IN ROM ?, pelleted cross in saltire, with V R B n in angles, (CNI XV 8; Muntoni 3; Berman 198). Nearly very fine VF, toned, scarce.

A native of Griznac in Languedoc and a former lecturer in canon law, Urbanus V introduced considerable reform and served as a patron to learning, founding the University of Hungary and restoring the school of medicine in Montpelier. He also founded colleges in Quezac and Bedoues, and obtained the submission of Byzantine Emperor John V Palaeologus, though not of the Eastern Church.
