Short-lived battalion formed in June 1916 to coal transports and hospital ships using members of the Coal Lumpers Union. Members of the Coaling Battalion were deemed to have enlisted for war service and were issued with the above pocket-button fitting work badge as well as an enamelled lapel badge. The battalion was disbanded in 1917 following industrial unrest and the badges forfeited, however the Navy had difficulty in retrieving them.
