PHRYGIA, Grimenothyrai, (early 2nd century A.D.), AE 23, (7.36 g), L. Tullius, magistrate, obv. draped bust of Senate to right around, **IERASY NKLHTOS*, rev. **EM TVLLI GRIMEN OQUR*, The god Men standing left, holding pine-cone in his right hand and spear or sceptre in his left hand, (S.-, SNG von Aulock -; Von Aulock, Phrygiens II 340 [This Coin] = Lindgren and Kovacs 955 [This Coin, Plate 33], RPC 2482 [This Coin cited]). Very fine, natural light brown surfaces, very rare.
Ex CNG eSale 127, 23 November 2005, (lot 101) coming from the Garth R. Drewry Collection, previously from the Burstein Collection and the Henry Clay Lindgren Collection, lot includes various tickets.
The magistrate Lucius Tullius Per., was responsible for producing coins with Hadrian's and Trajan's portrait so he was probably in charge in 117 A.D. This issue without emperor portait could come from the last year of Trajan or continued under the first few years of Hadrian.
