PAIR: War Medal 1939-45; Australia Service Medal 1939-45. 402405 J.W.Sandilands. Both medals impressed. Some contact marks, otherwise good very fine.

Awarded DFC: LG 23/5/1944, p2350; CAG 1/6/1944, p1115 - Flt Lieut James Walter Sandilands with 82 Sqn (RAF), for excellent leadership and fearlessness in attacks.

James Walter Sandilands, station overseer, born 12Jun1912 at Uralla, NSW; Enl.19Aug1940 at Sydney, NSW; Pilot Officer 15Feb1942, Flying Officer 15Aug1942, Flt Lieutenant 15Feb1944; died in air accident 13Apr1944 as Flt Lieutenant with 82 Sqn (RAF); Flt Lt J.W.Sandilands was killed while doing an experimental bombing flight with 82 Sqn RAF at Jumchar in India when his Vengeance aircraft failed to pull up out of a dive and it crashed at the runway and burst into flames. He was buried at Chittagong Cemetery, India. His name is on the Uralla NSW Roll of Honour.
