Neven Robinson Read, born 10Dec1903 at Cobar, NSW; Appt'd Cadet Midshipman PNF 01Jan1917 with Home Port at Sydney; to Midshipman 01Jan1921; loaned to RN for service and training 15Jan1921; to A/Sub Lieut 01May1923; to Sub Lieut 01Dec1923; to Lieut 01Sep1925; loan to RN for service and training 27Nov1931; to Lt/Cdr 01Sep1933; granted war service rank of Cdr 01Dec1944; trf to Emergency List and re-appt for temporary service 10Dec1948; Appt for temporary service terminated 20Mar1952; Trf to Retired List 21Mar1952; served at various postings and passed several training courses during his career and commanded a variety of ships from 1936 onwards, some of which include war-time commands on ships, HMAS Warrnambool (minesweeper) 28Mar1943 - 27Feb1944, HMAS Stuart (destroyer) 04Mar - 04May 1944, HMAS Gascoyne (frigate) 05May - 26Nov1944, HMAS Whyalla (minesweeper) 01Dec1944 - 22Jun1945, and HMAS Ballarat (minesweeper) 19Jun - Nov1945.
