THE ARTILLERIST'S MANUAL, compiled from standard works for the use of the Artillerymen, Light Companies, and Mounted Troop of the Victoria Volunteer Artillery Corps, by authority of John Ferres, Government Printer, Melbourne, 1856, with Preface signed H.P., at the front inscribed in pen, 'To The Honble Surveyor General with H.Powele's compts', hardcover, gold blocked on the cover with the name, 'Captain Clarke R.E., V.V.A.R. Manual', approx 170pp, in a custom made case by a professional book binder, with fold-over cover. Some marking to front and back inside cover pages, otherwise fine and rare.

This book belonged to Captain Andrew Clarke R.E. who was appointed surveyor-general of Victoria in 1853. He had an interesting military and civilian career spanning more than 50 years. He was a British soldier and governor, serving as governor of Singapore and Straits Settlements. Among his many other pursuits he also served as surveyor and politician in Australia. He attained the rank of lieutenant-general and was appointed CB (Civil) in 1869, KCMG in 1873, CIE in 1877 and GCMG in 1885.
