ISLAND OF VAN DIEMEN'S LAND, Attorney-General's charge sheet on vellum and dated 18 April 1853 against William Ward for the theft of twelve hundred weight of hay from Randall Young, signed by the prosecutor, Valentine Fleming, on reverse is recorded 'Plea Guilty' and was sentenced to hard labour for two years. Stains and some vellum loss and pin-holes, otherwise very good.

Sir Valentine Fleming was born in England and educated at Bangor and Trinity College, Dublin. He was appointed commissioner of insolvent debtors, Hobart Town, Van Diemen's Land in 1841. He was appointed Solicitor-General in 1844, Attorney-General in 1848, a member of the Legislative Council in 1851 and Chief justice of the Supreme Court of Van Diemen's Land in 1854. He was knighted in 1856.
