Harry New, jockey, age 34, born at Wedderburn, Vic; Enl.26Oct1916 at Cootamundra, NSW; Emb.09Nov1916; AWL until arrested 16Mar1917 and awarded 21 days Field Punishment; to France 14Jun1917; ops in France and Flanders with 1Bn from 20Jul1917 followed by attacks on Menin Road and Glencorse Wood; AWOL 21-25Oct1917 and awarded 60 days FP2 at court martial; sick with trench feet 07-12Jul1918 at hospital in Boulogne followed by unit advance on Lihons and Hindenburg Line; to England 08Aug1918 then sick; rejoined unit 19Nov1918; AWL in London 05-18Jun1919 and awarded 21 days Field Punishment; RTA 13Jul1919; Disch.06Oct1919; worked in munitions factory in WWII.^^Harry New was obviously a prominent jockey in Melbourne as it was reported in several newspapers that in the hurdle race at Caulfield on Tuesday 26 December 1911, Harry New sustained severe concussion of the brain when his horse, Yield, fell in the Hurdle Race.^^With copy of Service File, 3 b&w photos and other research.
