VIKING COINAGE OF DANISH EAST ANGLIA, (885-915 A.D.), silver penny, St Eadmund memorial coinage, Ipswich Mint?, moneyer Daegmund, (1.45 g), obv. barred A (alpha) with trefoil of pellets on each side, within solid inner circle, legend +SC E EADMVND RE around, rev. small cross in centre, around +DAIEMOND MONETA, (S.960, N.483, BMC -). Toned, very fine or better and rare.
Ex S.J.Green Collection. Previously Spink Auction 18012 Lot # 212. The Allan Williams collection Part II. Purchased M.R.Roberts May 1991. Probably ex Cuerdale Hoard, 1840.
Edward Hawkins in the Numismatic Chronicle Volume 5 (1842/43) noted that there were 1770 St Eadmund Memorial type coins in the Cuerdale (Lancashire) Hoard of 1840. With tickets.
