JAPAN, Empire. Meiji Copper 50 Sen Pattern Trial strike(?), dated year 4 = 1871, (11.18 g), 31.5mm, obv. dragon right, head reverted, within beaded border; Japanese legend around, rev. stylised rising sun, with rays emitted from lined circular centre, within beaded border; wreath of flowering plants below, chrysanthemum between two paulownia flowers above, reeded edge, (cf. KM Y4 [same dies]). Very fine and very rare.

Usually struck in silver, this copper example is likely to have been a pattern trial strike. A similar example from the same dies was in Roma eSale 67 6 February 2020 (lot 1418).
