THESSALY, Larissa, (400-350 B.C.), silver drachm, (5.80 g), BCD dates early - mid 4th century, obv. Nymph Larissa three quarters facing to right, with ampyx and massed hair by cheek, dotted border, rev. horse with straight legs feeding to r. feet on dotted exergue ground line, above **LARI*, plain in exergue, (cf.2124, BCD 380.8 ([This Coin] CNG Triton XV), cf.Herrmann ZfN (1925) (pl.VIII, 7 similar dies), C.Lorber (Florilegium Numismaticum, st. U. Westermark), Group 4, head type 19, cf.No. 47 [very similar obverse die, and reverse die similar to 53.1, p.270-1 and p.279) new unlisted dies). Extremely fine, lightly toned and an extremely rare variety.

Ex Noble Numismatics Sale 107 (lot 3276) previously from Triton XV, Classical Numismatic Group, January 3, 2012 (lot 380.8 as part of lot of 23 in lot 380), coming from the BCD Collection.
BCD notes as from similar dies to 47/53.1. The dies of this coin are unpublished except in Triton XV. Noted by BCD as having a metal flaw on the nymph's cheek and a small die flaw above right on dotted border. A small part of horse's head off flan. No examples noted by Lorber, and is not illustrated by C.C. Lorber in the article "The Early Facing Head Drachms of Thessalian Larissa" in Florilegium Numismaticum, Studia in Honorem U.Westermark Edita, pp.259-282.
