IONIA, Smyrna, 'Britannicus' Caesar, (died 55 A.D.), AE 17, (4.30 g), obv. bare head of Britannicus to right, below ZMY, rev. Nike flying right, holding trophy over her left shoulder around **EPI FILISTOU EIKADIOS*, (S. 516, RPC I, 2476, Klose XXXI, Lindgren and Kovacs 562, BMC 284). Very fine and very rare.

Ex CNG eSale 171, January 11, 2012 (lot 954 part).
This unusual type is noted in RPC for 92 examples. The authors of RPC dispute Klose's identification of the head being of Britannicus but claim it as Nero. Either is possible. Britannicus was the son of Claudius and Messalina born about 41-42 A.D. In 55 he was poisoned by Agrippina Junior to clear the way for Nero to be emperor. Lot includes detailed collectors descriptive flip.
