The Legion of Frontiersmen was formed in New Zealand in 1911 to assist the authorities in states of emergency, such as fires, floods, earthquakes and other disasters where the use of additional trained men are needed at short notice. Many other duties are carried out, and members are expected to assist in promoting the British way of life and loyalty to the Throne. The performance of all duties is on a voluntary basis with no payment being made to the individual for services rendered. Membership of the Legion is available to any male 21 years of age and over, British by birth or naturalisation and of good character. (Information from 1991, courtesy Oldham & Delahunt).
