FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE MEDAL, handcrafted in gold (22ct, 9.1g, 22mm), no maker, ring top and pin-back suspension, reverse inscribed 'Z.E.Taylor/March 1949'. Very fine.

With handwitten note from the recipient explaining the history of the medal.

Awarded to the nurse in Christchurch Hospital School of Nursing, who gained the highest marks in the Hospital final examination.

The medal award was first recorded in 1908. It features the head of Florence Nightingale from a mould crafted from a sketch of her which hung in the rooms of the Manchester Registered Nurses Association. This piece was one of the last handcrafted medals of its type, having been replaced later with a struck piece.
