MOTOR AMBULANCE, 1915, handcrafted in gold (9ct, 18.0g, 33mm), by 'W', ring top suspension with crimson ribbon, reverse inscribed 'This Souvenir is Presented/To/Capt F.J.Thomas./In Connection With The/Subscription Raised By Him/For/Three Motor Ambulances/For The Citizens Of Auckland./Presented by/Spink & Miller Ltd'. Very fine.

In 1913 Captain Thomas asked permission of the Auckland Charitable Aid Board to raise a fund by public subscription to purchase a motor ambulance for the institution. The request was granted and 4,500 circulars were issued inviting subscriptions. This appeal returned ?844/14/10. To this the Government added a subsidy of ?1,013/13/0, making the total available ?1,858/7/10. A total of three vehicles were purchased, the last being handed over on 30 November 1915.
