"PRESBYTERIAN OFFICE BEARERS' ASSOCIATION

The first-quarterly meeting of the executive of the Presbyterian Office-bearers' Association was held on Saturday afternoon in Holmes Hall when there were thirteen present. After routine business was transacted, Rev. H.Davies, of Canton, addressed the meeting, urging a strong appeal on behalf of his district (Yun Woh), one of the parishes of the Canton Village Missions. Mr Davies supplied a considerable amount of information regarding the present, condition of affairs in China, showing that there was a great upheaval going on and that China was to a large extent moulding itself on western lines. China would be either a power for good or for evil, in her future, according as the Christian Church directed her energies. To this effect the Christian Churches of China were uniting so that together they could make a stronger impression on the rising generation. The "isms" were being sunk in favour of a strong united Christian church. Yun Woh the centre of a district with a population of 200,000, and the Village Mission wished to add to the existing buildings accommodation for a girls' school, to remodel and enlarge the present building for a boys' school, to turn the present missioner's house into a dwelling for an unmarried woman worker with girl boarders, and to erect a new pastor's house on land already purchased. The cost of these works was estimated to be ?1850, ?350 of which was already in hand in China, and ?250 had so far been promised as the result of Mr Davies' efforts in New Zealand. The latter sum represented only about two months' work as up to two months ago Mr Davies had no authority to make an appeal. After the meeting it was unanimously decided that the executive recommend that a special appeal be made by cards and circulars to the churches of the Presbytery on behalf of Mr Davies' work and that the thanks of the meeting be extended to Mr Davies for his address".
