John Sydney James Clancy enlisted in the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force on 11 August 1914 and served at Rabaul, New Guinea. On returning to Australia he was discharged on 18 January 1915. He then joined the AIF on 14 January 1916 and served on the Western Front with the 20th Battalion. He was wounded in action on 3 May 1917. He returned to Australia and was discharged on 2 July 1918. He then resumed work with the civil service and studied law part-time obtaining his Law Degree from the University of Sydney in 1925.
He was appointed to the District Court bench in 1931 where he served until he was appointed to the Supreme Court of NSW in 1947 and then was appointed Senior Puisne Justice and Acting Chief Justice 1964-65. Justice Clancy's most well known case was the trial of Stephen Bradley who in 1960 had kidnapped and murdered the 8-year old boy, Graeme Thorne, whose father had won the Sydney Opera House lottery and who Bradley tried to blackmail. On 29 March 1961 Justice Clancy found Stephen Bradley guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment. Justice Clancy received an honorary Doctorate of Letters from the University of New England in 1962 and in the 1964 New Years Honours List he was made a Companion of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George. He retired from the bench in May 1965.
John Clancy also was a foundation member of and a tireless worker for the University of NSW and for his contribution he was created a Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in the 1967 New Years Honours List. Sir John Clancy died on 15 October 1970. He was awarded a posthumous degree of Doctor of Laws by the University of NSW on 23 August 1971 as well as establishing the Sir John Clancy Auditorium in tribute to his service to the university.
