The Redfern Municipal Band (late South Sydney Band), the 1922 Australian champions, having just completed an unbroken season of two years showing at the Hippodrome Theatre every Sunday night arrived in Dunedin on 15 February 1923 to compete in the NZ Band Championships.^^The band won First Selection with an aggregate score of 281 points, seven ahead of First Canterbury Mounted. They also won the Besson Shield for the highest aggregate points in the tests selections and quickstep with 325 points. They then won the final competition of the contest in the A and B Grade, own selection playing 'Tristan and Isolde', scoring 147 points. For the overall competition based on results from all events they came third behind Invercargill Hibernian and 1st Canterbury Mounteds. In the E Flat Soprano Cornet Solo, W.Lahey of Redfern Municipal Band won the gold medal for first place.^^The solo competitions in connection with the Dunedin brass bands' festival were held at His Majesty's Theatre. In the E Flat Tenor Horn Solo the winner was W.Smith of St Kilda with 91 points. Second placegetter scored 90 points and third scored 89 points. Unfortunately R.Cadden just missed a placing obtaining the fourth highest score with 88 points.
