NEW ZEALAND COMPETITIONS SOCIETY, Wellington Festival, 1912, struck in bronze (39mm), no maker, reverse inscribed 'Recitation/Girls Under 14/2nd Prize/Won By/Miss C.M.Aitcheson/Wellington'. One time cleaned, now re-toned, very fine and rare.
This 6-day festival was held at the Wellington Town Hall. The recitation for girls under 14 who had never won a first prize at this or similar competitions was Tennyson's 'The Brook'. The competitors were Misses G.Dickel (Palmerston North), M.Rowlands (Palmerston North), C.M.Aitcheson (Wellington), V.M.Johnson (Wellington), M.Boutell (Wellington), L.Snow (Wellington), Hazel F.Jeffery (Wellington), L.Rowntree (Wellington) and M.J.McLaren (Wellington). The children generally recited with uncommon ability, considering their youth. The judge (Mr Montague) recalled the following for the final, Misses C.M.Aitcheson, V.M.Johnson, Hazell Jeffery and M.J.McLaren.^^In the final, the judge Mr Montague said that he was afraid there were mistakes in punctuation in the book which had led the children or their teachers astray in two or three instances. The results were:- 1, Miss Jeffery (142 marks); 2, Miss Aitcheson (139 marks); 3, Miss McLaren (130 marks).
