From the 'Press', 28 May 1917. Courtesy National Library of New Zealand - Papers Past.^^The death occurred yesterday of Mr Benjamin Bull, a well-known builder and contractor of Christchurch. Mr Bull was born in London in 1844, and after four years at sea he returned to his birth-place, where he learned his trade as a builder, and followed it until he left for New Zealand in 1873, arriving in Wellington by the ship St. Leonards. Mr Bull came down to Christchurch shortly after his arrival in New Zealand, and for many years carried on his business, being the builder of the Halswell Church, the Wesleyan Church at Shirley, and the public schools at Spreydon and Lyttelton. He also put up additions to the Provincial Government Buildings, and to the Burnham Industrial School. When St. Albans was a borough, Mr Bull occupied the position of Mayor for three years, and for eleven years he was a councillor of the borough. He had also been connected with the St. Albans School Committee for a long time, and held a seat on the licensing bench for twelve years. He took an active interest in both municipal and Dominion politics, and was also an ardent Oddfellow, having been initiated in 1860. In Christchurch he was connected with the City of Christchurch Lodge.
