OHOKA, hand engraved in gold (9ct, 7.7g, 35x25mm), no maker, ring top suspension, reverse inscribed 'W.Martin/First/20 Mile Road Race/Ohoka/1923'. Very fine.
A road race was held at Ohoka on Saturday 7 April 1923, under the auspices of the Ohoka and Eyreton Sports Club, over a distance of twenty miles, the course being around a block of approximately five miles. The roads were good, with the exception of a stretch of about one and a half miles, which was very loose. Forty-five riders started, and an interesting race resulted in 1st place going to W.Martin (Christchurch), 6min, riding time 57min 21sec.
