S.S.CHINGTU, presentation piece to Chief Steward in form of a circular magnifying hand mirror set in a sterling silver frame with a voided holder at one side (tot size 16.5mm wide x 22cm long), hallmarked for Birmingham 1901 by maker 'L&S' (Levi & Salaman, Birmingham), reverse inscribed 'Presented/To/Mr. E.Perkis/Chief Steward/of the/S.S.Chingtu/By the Passengers as a token of/esteem & Appreciation/of his kindness during the passage/Hong Kong to Australia/April 28th 05'. Mirror age marked around edge and other sections, the holder with some small dents and stain marks, otherwise fine and unique.

In 1905 Chief Steward E.Perkis of New Zealand was about 25 years of age while serving on board the S.S.Chingtu, a ship in the fleet of China Navigation Company. In 1911 he was Chief Steward aboard another ship of the China Navigation Company, the S.S.Changsha, and was recorded as 31 years of age from New Zealand. In April 1901 the S.S.Chingtu was Transport 105 for the voyage carrying the Australian contingents back to Sydney, Australia from the Boxer Rebellion.
