CARD CASE, with diagonal groove pattern (56.77g, 60x86mm), hallmarked for Birmingham 1888 by maker B.H.J (B.H.Joseph & Co, Birmingham), on the opposite side is inscribed 'Jenner & Knewstub Ltd', on one side of the body of the case is inscribed diagonally 'Sir John Sinclair.'. Very fine.
Sir John Sinclair died at Dunedin on 4 December 1940. He was born at Angelsea in Wales where he received his early education and came with his family to Port Chalmers in New Zealand in the early 1860s. He was educated at Otago Boys' High School and was admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court in 1875. He was a director of the Trustees Executors and Agency Company. He was a New Zealand representative on the Dominions Royal Commission from 1912 to 1917 and was knighted the following year. Sir John served for three periods in the Legislative Council.^ ^Jenner & Knewstub Ltd, Frederick Jenner and Fabian James Knewstub, was a highly regarded antique jewellery firm in London with many royal warrants. The firm was established in about 1856 and was liquidated in 1889 and absorbed into the business of A.Webster & Co.^^With research.
