ROTORUA, advertising miniature mirror, c1930s, circular plastic or bone frame (51mm), obverse, impressed on the design of a cracker biscuit 'Rotorua' in the centre, with 'Takes The/Biscuit' around, and at the bottom edge 'Made Expressly For H.Carew, Rotorua, N.Z.', reverse, a mirror. The mirror with a hairline scratch and many rust spots, otherwise very fine/very good.
In the 1930s H.Carew commissioned several items, all made by Grimwades, England. This is possibly one of these. 'Takes the Biscuit' is an old-time expression that could mean to take first place or judged to be the winner. Now, the Cambridge Dictionary meaning is 'doing something extremely annoying or surprising'.
