MACEDON, Kingdom of Philip II, (359-336 B.C.), gold stater, (8.57 g), Pella Mint, issued c.340-328 B.C., obv. head of Apollo to right with laureate wreath, rev. galloping biga driven by charioteer holding goad to right, trident below, in exergue **FILIPPOV*, (cf.S.6663, cf.Le Rider 227 SNG Cop 525). Extremely fine and lustrous with traces of mint bloom, rare.

Ex Chris Rudd Fixed Price List 115, #1. Previously the Mike O'Bee Collection and the Nigel Robinson Collection.^Rudd calls this "a magnificent specimen of historic prototype of so many gold staters, both British and Gaulish".
