MBE GROUP OF SIX: The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, Member (MBE) (Civil); 1939-45 Star; France and Germany Star; Defence Medal 1939-45; War Medal 1939-45; Air Efficiency Award (GVIR coinage profile IND:IMP). The first five medals unnamed as issued, Flt-Lt. C.A.Wiard. R.A.F.V.R. on the last medal. The named medal engraved. Swing mounted, good extremely fine.

Together with, ^1) A swing mounted set of five miniatures before the award of the MBE.^2) A swing mounted set of six miniatures including the MBE.^3) Past Master enamelled gilt silver neck badge for Billingsgate Ward Club, the reverse engraved, 'C.A.Wiard, M.B.E./Master/1969-70', hallmarked for Birmingham 1968 by maker TK&S (Toye, Kenning & Spencer), in their case.^4) Lime Street Ward Club enamelled gilt silver neck badge, reverse engraved, 'C.A.Wiard/1978/9', hallmark unclear but appears to be for Sheffield 1976 by maker T.K&S (Toye, Kenning & Spencer), in their satchel.^5) Royal Mint case of issue for MBE.^6) Card boxes of issue (3) for WWII medals and Air Efficiency Award.^7) Named and framed and glazed certificate dated 6 February 1946 for the Freedom of the City of London bestowed upon Charles Arthur Wiard.^8) Named and framed and glazed certificate dated 20 February 1970 from the Billingsgate and Leadenhall Markets Committee on the occasion of the award of the M.B.E. to Charles Arthur Wiard.^9) Named and framed and glazed certificate dated 20 April 1979 from the Corporation of London bestowed in recognition of the service of Charles Arthur Wiard M.B.E., A.E.^10) Book titled, 'What the RAF Meant for the Occupied Netherlands', being a coloured sketchbook printed secretly in 1944 with additional sketches added in 1945 including 'The Last Sprint of Osendarp', a handwritten note states 'Osendarp was a Dutch sprinter who I knew in the years before the war. He was 3rd in the Olympic 100 yards and became a Nazi. When I arrived in the Hague in Apl '45 I asked members of the Underground movement - with whom I was in contact - about him. Regarded as a traitor they were searching Holland for him. They found him - to his cost. I didn't ask what his fate was. This page was added to the book especially for me. Together with the last page it makes this book unique.'^11) An Oranje Dutch Resistance armband.^12) A large quantity of original newspaper cuttings relating to the Dieppe Raid.^13) A large number of photographs of Wiard's various stages of service, some annotated.^14) Air Ministry documents relating to commissions and medal claims.^15) A selection of postcard photographs, some annotated, of the 1936 Olympic Stadium and Olympic Village including six stamped and postmarked postcards and letters regarding Wiard's selection for the British Team as a member of the 4 X 100m relay for the 1936 Olympics.^16) A variety of war related postcards as well as a booklet, 32pp, for The Battle of Britain August - October 1940 and another titled 'War/The Mind of a Nazi' No.15 April 4th, 1942, being a booklet issued fortnightly by the Army Bureau of Current Affairs.^17) Various other documents and other items including 2 small timber wall hanging souvenirs of Holland.^MBE: Supplement to LG 1/1/1970, p18 - to Charles Arthur Wiard, Clerk and Superintendent, Billingsgate and Leadenhall Markets. ^Charles Arthur Wiard was the son of a Freeman of the City of London and when his father died in 1922 he and his three younger sisters were placed into the Freeman's Orphan School at Brixton. He won a number of prizes, both academic and athletic, including the Lord Mayor's Prize for the most deserving scholar leaving school. He commenced service with the Corporation of London in the Mayor's and City of London Court in 1927 and also maintained his interest in athletics by joining the Blackheath Harriers in 1928.^Wiard was selected as 1st Reserve for England in the 1934 Empire Games and was the 100 and 200 yards county champion for Kent from 1936 to 1938. He was also selected to represent Great Britain as a member of the 4 X 100 metres relay team at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. He ran the first leg in heat 2 but unfortunately the team did not qualify for the final. When he returned to England he continued to compete for both club and country and as a member of the Blackheath Harriers 4 X 110 yards relay time was winner of the English Championship in 1937.^He joined the Auxiliary Air Force in 1938 and the following year was mobilised as an AC2. He survived injuries during the blitz in 1940 and was hospitalised for 8 weeks and then in October 1940 he was commissioned as a Flying Officer in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He served as second in command of the RAF Seaborne Party, as part of the Servicing Commandos, for Operation Jubilee - the Dieppe Raid on 19 August 1942.^Later in the war he served as part of No.18 RAF Staging Post in conjunction with the Dutch Underground and was in the Hague to help distribute food to the starving population during the severe winter of 1944-45. Wiard was promoted to Flying Officer in January 1949 and was awarded the Air Efficiency Award the following year. ^After his war-time service Wiard returned to employment with the Guildhall and was appointed Principal Assistant to the Clerk and Superintendent Billingsgate and Leadenhall Markets in 1949. In 1956 he was appointed Clerk and Superintendent of the same markets and he held this post until his retirement in 1979.^Charles Wiard held a number of positions during his life including President of the Blackheath Harriers, President of the Old Freemen's Association, Vice President of the Kent County Athletic Association, Vice President, Chairman and Trustee of Billingsgate Christian Mission and Dispensary, Committee of Management and Treasurer of Fishmongers and Poulterers Institution, Liveryman of the Fishmongers Company, Past Master of Billingsgate Ward Club, Past Master of Lime Street Ward Club, Past Master of The Worshipful Company of Poulterers, Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Merchant Taylors, Churchwarden at St Andrew Hubbard - City of London, Member of Parochial Church Council St Mary-at-Hill, City of London and while in office he was Market Superintendent Chairman of Joint Market Labour Committee. He died in Bromley, Kent in 1994.^With research.
