BOIOTIA, Thebes, (395-338 B.C.), magistrate Eche.., silver stater, (12.20 g), obv. Boiotian shield, rev. amphora in concave field, with letters E XE either side, (cf.S.2398, Hepworth Series A1, No.47 [This Coin Illustrated], BCD 484 (p.92, Triton IX [lot 484 This Coin] chronology suggested 390-382 B.C., BMC 144 [p.82]). With underlying gold red and blue patination around the devices). Nearly extremely fine and a rare type.

Ex Classical Numismatics Group, Auction Sale Triton IX January 10, 2006 (lot 484), previously from the BCD Collection. Previously from The J.A. Spranger Collection of Trinity College , Cambridge and Florence sold in Sotheby London Sale May 12, 1983 (lot 194 illustrated) previously from the Leo Hamburger Frankfurt Sale 98, April 3, 1933 (lot 617 illustrated plate 20). With collectors detailed and Triton IX ticket.
Robert Hepworth "The 4th Century B.C. Magistrate Coinage of the Boiotian Confederacy" pp.61-89 (Numismatic Chronicle, Hellenic Numismatic Society, 1998) describes the series as having 97 different reverse varieties noted from 1700 examples type A1, No.47 this coin illustrated with a rarity of 6-20 known examples.
