VOLUNTEER FORCE LONG SERVICE MEDAL, (Victoria Regina et Imperatrix), with brooch suspension. B.J.Wardill. Major. Retired List. Engraved. In fitted case, hairlines, otherwise nearly extremely fine.

B.J.Wardill Retired List.^Also entitled to Colonial Auxiliary Forces Decoration^CAFD: CAG No.18 11/4/1902, p180 to Maj. Benjamin Johnson Wardill Retired List.^Benjamin Johnson Wardill, born 15Oct1842 at Everton, Liverpool, Lancashire, England; migrated to Melbourne, Australia in 1861 and worked as a clerk for the Colonial Sugar Company; joined Garrison Artillery soon after arrival and rose to rank of Major in the Harbour Trust Garrison Bty in 1885; was Secretary of the Melbourne Cricket Club from 30Apr1878 to Feb1911; he played cricket and represented Victoria twice; he organised and managed the Australian tour of England in 1886 and also managed the tours of 1899 and 1902; he was an excellent rifleman and in 1876 was a member of the Australian Shooting Team that toured the USA and competed at the Philadelphia International Exhibition; Benjamin Johnson Wardill was also instrumental in the establishment of the Baseball Section of the Melbourne Cricket Club and was secretary of the Melbourne Baseball Club from 1888 to 1910; ill health caused him to resign his secretarial position of both the cricket and baseball sections of Melbourne; died of heart disease on 15Oct1917 and was buried at St Kilda Cemetery.^With research.
