SICILY, Gela, (490-475 BC), silver didrachm, (8.79g), obv, bearded and nude horseman on horse prancing right, holding reins in left hand and spear in raised right hand, rev. forepart of a bearded manheaded bull charging right (the river god Gelas), C-E-**L*-A (S.713, Jenkins, Gela Group Ib, 8 [O5, R4], HGC 2 362, Buceti 8, SNG ANS 13, SNG Cop 256). Attractive old cabinet tone, struck on an odd shaped flan, extremely fine.
