EGYPT, Kingdom of Ptolemy II, (282-246 B.C.), gold octadrachm, (27.72 grams), Alexandria mint, obv. conjoined busts to right of Ptolemy II diademed and draped and Arsinoe II diademed and veiled, above **ADELFWN*, shield behind, rev. conjoined busts to right of Ptolemy I diademed and wearing aegis and Berenike I diademed and veiled, above **QEWN*, (S.7789 [£2750], Sv.603 [Pl.14, 15-17], SNG Cop. 132, Hazard C1034). Attractive extremely fine and rare.

The issue has also been attributed to Ptolemy III (Sear), but more recent scholarship (SNG Cop. and Hazard) place it under Ptolemy II. These coins were valued at 100 silver drachms (Hazard p.105].
