STAFFORDSHIRE, Stafford, Horton and Company, penny, 1801, arms of town, a castle and four lions, statant gardant, Stafford above, 1801 below/Stafford knot, WH monogram, by Wyon, (Davis 96). In beautiful state, blue and golden brown patina, about uncirculated and rare.
The Stafford-knot was a charge on the banner of Sir Henry de Stafford. Horton and Co were boot manufacturers, one of the principals occupied a high public position in the town.
