PONTUS AND BOSPORUS, Kingdom of, Sauromates, (A.D. 172-211), electrum stater, (7.710 grams), struck year 493 = A.D. 196, obv. diademed and draped bust to right of Sauromates, around BACI**L*EWC CAYPOMATOY, rev. laureate head of Septimius Severus to right, star before, date below **G*qV (493), dotted border, (cf.S.5476; Frolova p.175, obv. C, rev c [these dies], cf.BMC 9). Very fine and rare.

Ex Christie's, London, 'The Property of a Gentleman' June 18, 1979 (lot 10, illustrated and realised Å“400). Frolova in the comprehensive study of this series notes four examples from the same dies and fourteen known of this date.
