PRESENTATION MEDAL, in silver 1881, with engraved inscription 'Presented to John Williams by his shopmates in appreciation of his energy and endurance in his maiden attempt at Long Distance Walking having covered 97 1/2 Miles in 24 hours, 15th Oct. 1881, hallmarked on edge and signed and made by H. Steiner of Adelaide. Mounted on edge with ring support, otherwise very fine or better.
J. Henry Steiner (1835-1914) a jeweller of Adelaide was born in Rodenberg, near Hanover, Germany and arrived in Adelaide on the Ohio in 1858. He commenced business in Rundle Street where he remained until 1884. Between these years he was one of the most prolific of Adelaide's jewellers and silversmiths and consequently received the patronage of several governors. He exhibited jewellery at the Melbourne Intercolonial Exhibition in 1866-7, the Paris Universal Exhibition in 1878 and the Sydney International Exhibition in 1879.
